Service Floor
Function
This floor is used for everyday work and cooking. There is an open kitchen (open-hearth kitchen) with a built-in stone fireplace (masonry hearth). Smoke rises into a small opening (smoke hole) just below the wooden ceiling and is led out through the wall.
Cooking and Heating
Next to the fireplace, there is a stone oven (masonry oven), like those sometimes found in medieval residential towers.
Water Disposal
Wastewater from the kitchen is drained through a wooden spout – a sloping timber beam with a carved groove that directs the flow of water through the wall.
Living Space
There is also a small living room (parlour) on this floor. It is separated from the kitchen by simple wooden walls made of posts and planks. This room can be warmed by the heat from the adjacent masonry oven.
