Service Floor

The service floor contains the open-hearth kitchen, equipped with a built-in masonry hearth. Just below the wooden ceiling is a smoke hole, through which smoke is channelled outwards through the masonry.

Next to it is a masonry oven, of the type occasionally found in medieval residential towers. Wastewater from the open-hearth kitchen could be drained outside through a wooden spout – a slanted timber beam with a carved channel – that directed the flow through the wall.

Separated by post-and-plank walls, an additional parlour has also been integrated into this floor, which can be heated by the adjacent oven.
