Wooden Walkway

Through two round-arched exterior doors, which lie opposite each other, one enters the wooden walkway from the service floor. Most medieval towers in Carinthia and Styria, whether keep or residential tower, had such a wooden walkway on the penultimate floor.

This walkway served several functions. On the one hand, food, water, firewood, and other materials could be easily hauled up and brought in via rope and basket along this protruding walkway. On the other hand, the walkway provided a good vantage point to oversee the castle grounds, and the tower could also be defended from there in the event of an attack.

From the service floor, a block staircase leads to the uppermost floor (the defence floor).
