Carpentry
The carpenter was a particularly important craftsman for medieval construction, as wood was a very important building material. He was responsible for the roof trusses and their covering with wooden shingles, as well as for the construction of work and support scaffolds, including ladders and ramps, lifts, and cranes.
The carpenter’s tools usually consisted of a splitting axe, broad axe, square, chisel, mallet, and hand saw.
Trees were felled with the felling axe.
The splitting axe was used for splitting tree trunks and branches.
The broad axe was slightly smaller than the splitting axe and had a broader metal blade. It was used for hewing.
